Once owned by King Alfred, Burnham has a rich history that includes Prehistoric, Roman and Medieval occupation, with tales of ship wrecks and smuggling.
The now largely Victorian town sits by seven miles of unbroken sandy beach with vistas out over the Bristol Channel to hills and mountains beyond.
It has numerous lighthouses, including the Low one that uniquely sits on stilts, and the High one, that was the first in the country to be automated. Burnham also boasts the shortest pier in Britain. Its 14th century church contains remnants of Whitehall Palace and its tower has a curious lean not dissimilar to the one at Pisa!
Within the parish is the neighbouring port town of Highbridge, which has been an agricultural centre for centuries and is also remembered as a bustling centre in the days of steam.
The natural heritage of the surrounding area, with pretty villages and towns, such as Axbridge and Cheddar, has contributed to it winning the hearts of locals and visitors alike.
